Graffiti (quotation from Ovid’s Metamorphoses) on a column in the Entrance Front at Hardwick Hall, Nr Chesterfield, Derbyshire. House designed by Robert Smythson, built 1591. script reads: HIC LOCUS EST QUEM SI VERBIS AUDACIA DETER HAUD TIMEAM MAGNI DIXESSE PALATIA CAELI. This is the place, if I were to be bold, I would not be afraid to call high heaven’s Palatine. (Book I:151-176 The giants.)
