‘Scotswood Suspension Bridge’, known locally as ‘The Chain Bridge’, was three miles upstream from central Newcastle and opened in 1831, lasting until it was replaced in 1967. (From The Tyne and It’s Tributaries by WJ Palmer, 1882)
