‘Sunderland Bridge over the River Wear’, opened in 1796, was reconstructed in 1859 and replaced in 1929 renamed Wearmouth Bridge. Beyond is the railway bridge of 1879 (From The Monthly Chronicle of North-Country Lore and Legend, 1891)
