Carving of Mithras, originally a Persian sun-deity, on an altar in the Roman Mithras Temple at Brocolitia, or Procolitia, at Carrawbrough; near Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland. The altars are replicas, the originals being in Newcastle Museum of Antiquities. The left stone is pierced to allow a light to shine through
