Site of the Battle of Stamford Bridge, between King Harold, who won, and King Harald Hardrada of Norway in 1066; nineteen days later Harold was defeated by the Normans at Hastings, possibly worn out by the 270 mile march. (Obviously not the bridge that gave the village it’s name; this one was built in 1727)
