The village on Great Blasket, the largest of the Blasket Islands off the Dingle Peninsula, Co Kerry, finally deserted in 1953 when the hardships of living there became too much. The villagers created a remarkable literary tradition and the island is in the process of being made a national park. (Photo 1993)
